Discerning The Voice Of God

How do we know when God the Father is speaking to us through His Holy Spirit? This website is an accumulation of material for the purpose of helping people figure out how to hear God speak. The Bible is filled with examples of Him speaking and He still speaks to people today.

God could be speaking to you and you don’t realize it because you think what you’re hearing in your head is just yourself thinking. The only noticeable distinction between your thoughts and Jesus speaking could be noticed as a difference in the tone, style or inflection of what you’re hearing. Also, you may hear a word that you’ve never heard of before. You find yourself reaching for a dictionary or the word isn’t something you commonly say.

God may speak by dropping information right into your brain. Suddenly, the answer or solution just appears in your mind, like a download or information drop. You didn’t hear anything. The information just appeared in your mind. This may happen days or weeks after the time you asked Jesus about the issue. This is also called a deep inner knowing.

God may speak or communicate to you by giving you a strong urge or feeling that you need to do something. A person’s face or name may appear in your mind. This could represent a need to pray for the person.

God can speak through dreams, images or visions. This can happen anytime, day or night. It’s important to note, not all dreams come from God. Satan can cause you to dream and your own thoughts can result in dreams.

God may speak directly into your spirit. When this happens, others in the room will not hear anything because He is speaking from your spirit, not from your ears. The Holy Spirit’s voice adds to a person’s life, builds up and edifies. When Satan or his evil spirits speak, the voice will subtract, accuse or bring about anxiety. When the enemy speaks, you’ll hear words like “if you” or “does it really mean” or “You’ve really done well for yourself.” The enemy will try to turn people away from God and to their own efforts.

An example of this could be a job search. If you ask Jesus, through prayer, to help you find a job. You may find unexpected doors opening or unexpected people entering the picture and the result will be a great new job. Jesus can speak by fulfilling our prayers.

John 14:21 says,
Whoever has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me. The one who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and reveal Myself to him.

If you’re not hearing the Holy Spirit, do the following.

— Repent of sins.

Repent of your sins and ask Jesus to forgive you of your sins. Romans 10:9, John 3:36, Ephesians 1:4-7. Stop all the activities that are listed in the bible as being sins. Read Galatians 5:19-21, James 4:4.

Repent of your sins by saying this prayer.
Dear God, I confess I am a sinner. Thank You that Jesus took my punishment upon Himself when He died on the cross for my sins and then rose from the dead, defeating death. Today, I repent and place my trust in Jesus Christ alone for my salvation. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen. Romans 10:9

— Be baptized.
Be baptized in water. Romans 6:4-7.

— Commit yourself to Jesus.
Make a commitment to follow the commandments that are written in the Bible. Tell Jesus you’re committed to obeying His commandments and receiving his mercy and forgiveness. Romans 6:18-23.

WARNING: If you turn away from your commitment and go back to your old ways, then you’ll end up in Hell after you die. The Bible is very clear, that anyone who repents but continues in their sins will not be saved. The theory of Once Saved, Always Saved is false. Hebrews 10:26-27, Exodus 32:32, Revelation 3:5, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, Romans 6:23, Romans 8:5-8, Matthew 6:24, Matthew 7:13-14, Matthew 7:21, Luke 13:23-28, Galatians 5:19-21, Galatians 6:7.

As you seek to hear from God, keep in mind that everything that is from God will always line up with Bible scriptures. If a thought enters your mind and it doesn’t line up with Bible scriptures then disregard it completely. The enemy, Satan and his army of evil spirits try to deceive and mislead people.

1 John 4:1-3 says to test the spirit speaking and make sure it’s from God. Say, “Did Jesus Christ come in the flesh?” If you hear nothing or you hear something other than yes, then the spirit speaking is not God or from God.  Familiar spirits (demons) try to trick people by pretending to be dead relatives. The Bible explains that when people die, they do not linger on the earth as ghosts. We live one time, die and then find ourselves in Heaven or Hell. Hebrews 9:27 & Genesis 6:13

If you hear a voice you believe is from the spirit world, always test to make sure the spirit is not a demon trying to deceive you into believing it is from God. When you hear a spirit speak, you say…

“Did Jesus Christ come in the flesh?”
Then you wait quietly. If you hear nothing or you hear something other than YES, ignore the voice. If you hear it again, say “I rebuke you in Jesus name.”
